Dewan Rakyat Round-Up: Only BN MPs get to hand out extra aid

ADDITIONAL allocations for the needy are only given to Barisan Nasional members of parliament for distribution, Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Mi-nister Noriah Kasnon said yesterday.

Noriah said this when she replied to a question by Fong Po Kuan (DAP-Batu Gajah), who wanted to know why the ministry was not giving additional welfare allocations to MPs directly to reduce red tape.

Noriah said: “We do give additional money to the poor, but only through Barisan MPs. If you want such allocations, then join Barisan,” she said to jeers from the opposition bench. Fong said: “This is discrimination.”

Earlier, Datuk Halimah Mohd Sadique (BN-Tenggara) asked the ministry to state the findings of its Cari programme and the success in helping to distribute aid to the needy.

Noriah said under the programme, which ran from July 17 last year to March 6, 117,479 people applied for welfare aid.

Out of this number, 50,560 applications were approved while 44,293 were awaiting approval. The remaining applications were rejected.
