Give Kadazandusun based party chance to represent their people: Tailin

Godfrey Daya (left) and Tailin Mainan (right) at UPKO Kimanis meeting 0809Membakut : In conjunction with the on-going Election Commission (EC) re-delineation exercise of state constituency in Sabah, UPKO Kimanis Division chief Mr. Tailin Mainan suggest that Barisan Nasional especially UMNO should give chance to its Kadazandusun Murut based party counterpart to represent their own community in all constituency. This is inline with the principal of power sharing concept which upheld by all of Barisan Nasional component party. He was speaking during Kimanis UPKO divisional meeting recently in Membakut.

Mr. Tailin reiterate that some UMNO members should stop making claims for KDM seats especially through the mass media.

“What is happening in Kota Marudu and Keningau is disheartening. Making claims on KDM majority seats and asking a Barisan Nasional component deputy president to give up his seat is ridiculous. Who give them authority to dictate other component party? ”

He urges all UPKO members to stay calm and don’t react to such baseless claims made by some UMNO members.

“After all UMNO have dominated more than 55% of seats in Sabah apart from contesting all bumiputera seats in West Malaysia. UPKO never argue this.” Tailin also noted that former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had declared UPKO as the only party that represented the KDM race during the UPKO Congress in 2003.

He believe that under the new leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Sri Najib who is also the Barisan Nasional Chairman, will be fair and understand the needs of minority component party in Barisan Nasional.

Tailin, who is also UPKO supreme council member, reminded that UPKO, all these while, fighting for the KDM cause in education, language, citizenship and other matters.

“KDM community numbers are less than one million in whole entire world. We cannot determine the rules of the game because we are too few and mostly will be dictate by Malay majority “We just want to make sure that the minority are well represented and respected in the country” he stressed.

Also present during the meeting were Kimanis UPKO  Deputy Chief, Gundohing Godfrey Daya, all division members as well as Kimanis UPKO wing leaders Wilfred Stephen and Cecilia Ondoi.

Wasallam.

Dompok Proposes Courses For Plantation Sector

Bernard DompokPENAMPANG, July 19 (Bernama) — Nationwide training establishments should offer courses and programmes tailored for the plantation sector to reduce dependency on foreign labour.

This was one of the areas the country could look at seriously, to reduce the number of immigrant workers in the country while prioritising jobs for locals, said Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok.

He noted the dependency on foreign labour was “very great”, to such an extent the government applied strong measures to ensure locals were employed in the country’s main industries.

“To get Malaysians to work, what is required are people with training, knowledge upgrade…in the case of Sabah, we have the Monfort Youth Training Centre, so what I want to do is try to see if their programmes can be tailored for the plantation industry, so there will be a ready source of employees when they graduate.

“I think this applies to the many training establishments that we have in the country,” he said after launching the ‘Career in Plantation Industries and Commodities Sector Talk and Exhibition here Sunday.

He said for a country employing so many immigrant labourers, it was therefore, not right to see its own people not being able to secure jobs.

The nation’s plantation industry, he said, was currently employing nearly half a million foreign workers, mainly from neighbouring countries, and more than 50 per cent are those in Sabah.

As at January this year, there are 1.9 million registered foreign workers in the country, a drop of 200,000 from 2.1 million registered foreign workers as at September last year, according to Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in May.

Asked for reasons why locals were not entering the plantation sector, Dompok said it was based on a mixture of factors, adding that he was currently in talks with plantation owners to overcome this issue.

“Maybe, one way is to upgrade the facilities in the plantation, for example living acommodation or quarters,” he said.

Applications handed over to NRD by UPKO

Upko's Citizenship and Security Bureau YB Donald,Madius Tangau, Maijol Mahap, Arthur Sen, Hj JaffearKota Kinabalu: Upko’s Citizenship and Security Bureau has handed over 36 longstanding citizenship applications to the National Registration Department (NRD) in Sabah for a speedy solution.

The cases were handed over by the Bureau chief, Donald Mojuntin, during a courtesy call on the NRD Sabah Director, Haji Abdul Jaffear Henry, at the Federal Administrative Complex here.

Apart from discussing matters directly pertaining to citizenship, other related issues were raised like the issue of the Sabah Native Certificate and “Surat Berian” Wedding Status which falls under the State Native Court.

The use of the terms “Native” and “Sino-Native” in national identification documents were also queried as Upko is of the opinion that “Native” is not a specific race but just a categorical or a generic term used to describe a group of indigenous people.

“Furthermore the usage of the term is not legally accepted by the State of Sabah as it has not gone through the necessary stages to make it so. The matter should first be vetted by the State Attorney General’s office.

YB Donald Mojuntin & Hj Jaffear“When that is done, it will then have to be endorsed by the State Cabinet.

Finally it will have to pass through the State Assembly. Then and only then can it be accepted as a legal term that can be used in documents as important as our personal identifications. Otherwise it will and does create, for instance, NT land inheritance problems,” he said.

Mojuntin who is also Assistant Finance Minister and Moyog State Assemblyman and his delegation was also briefed by Jaffear on the department’s vision, mission, operation, past and up-coming programmes.

Biro members Alvin Lee CDO Moyog,Bryan M Moyog PKR & Pemuda UPKOMojuntin said the purpose of the visit was to deliberate on certain issues related to citizenship and also to enhance ties with NRD.

“As one of the main objectives of the Bureau is to ensure only genuine Sabahans or those legally qualified for it are bestowed citizenship, it is only appropriate to build and foster a strong and practical working relationship with the NRD,” he said.

He added that the visit was also auspicious as it comes right after the Prime Minister’s announcement of his 11 people-friendly measures which include improvements to the process of registering births in Sabah and Sarawak, on the occasion of his 100th day in office.

Dtk Patrick Sindu, Goven Lasung, Aldem Chia, Datin Dr. Jainah Sintian & NRD officialsAlso present were Upko Vice President, Senator Datuk Maijol Mahap, Upko Secretary Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau as well as Upko wing leaders Arthur Sen and Datin Dr Jainna Sintian. Among the Bureau members present were NGO activist Datuk Patrick Sindu and Persatuan Peranakan Ranau Chairman, Aldem Chia.

According to Mojuntin, the bureau had been receiving numerous grievances and complaints related to citizenship.

Tailin Moinon Ligunjang and the rest at Q&A session“These problems stem from non and late registrations of births, being born outside Sabah before Malaysia Day, marriages with foreigners and a myriad of other situations.

“This issue of citizenship, especially in Sabah, is one of the few fundamental problems that need to be sorted out for the Prime Minister’s 1Malaysia concept to be achieved, he said.

“We must remember that most of these relevant applicants have family members who are citizens. If their respective problem is not dealt with efficiently, it will not only disillusion the applicants themselves but their family members and friends will also lose confidence in the government’s delivery system and perhaps, the integrity of the government. It would be like a negative pyramid effect.”

Jaffear commended the effort of the Upko Bureau and welcomed any helping hand to assist the NRD, especially from elected representatives whether State or Parliament.

“The NRD is open to all constructive suggestions from any party as this will improve our department’s efficiency,” he said.

Etnik Lundayeh memerlukan pengiktirafan kerajaan BN?

Upko to reach out to Perak Orang Asli

Orang AsliKOTA KINABALU: A Sabah-based Barisan Nasional component party will launch five divisions in Perak today. The United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun and Murut Organisation (Upko) is spreading it wings to help provide a voice for the Orang Asli community there.

Upko president and Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok is expected to launch the five pro-tem divisions in Tapah, where he is attending the Perak Orang Asli Land Development Convention.

Upko supreme council member Albert Bingkasan said yesterday the Orang Asli of the Semai group had expressed their interests in joining the party for the past two years.

“The community wanted a vehicle in the country’s political mainstream and it appears they are attracted to our struggles in the party, which is focused on the indigenous communities.

“Many of them being Christians and indigenous also find it hard to expand, politically, with other BN parties which have different priorities for the communities they represent,” Bingkasan said.

Under Upko’s Constitution, membership is open to all Malaysians who subscribe to the party’s struggles, he added.

The party opened a division in Shah Alam, Selangor, two years ago where most of its members are from Sabah.

Upko, which has 44 divisions, is merging the divisions into 25 in line with the number of parliamentary seats in the state.

Indigenous Peoples Network of Malaysia president Adrian Lasimbang said estabishment of the branches would be a positive political development for the Orang Asli community.

“Presently in Parliament, the Orang Asli has only one representative, Senator Osman Bujang. They also do not have any political party to represent them.”

Lasimbang said in Peninsular Malaysia, there were more than 100,000 Orang Asli people from 18 groups, with the majority being the Semai community.

Gallery for Double Six victims

Double six 2009Kota Kinabalu: A gallery is being built to commemorate the lives of the late Tun Fuad Stephens and several others who perished in the “Double Six” air crash near its monument at Grace Point, Sembulan, here.

The RM900,000 State-funded gallery due to be completed by July 15 is tentatively scheduled to be launched on Sept. 16, the day Sabah together with Sarawak, Singapore and Malaya formed Malaysia in 1963. However, Singapore left the Federation in 1965.

The gallery would be managed by City Hall as another tourist attraction in the State capital.

State Assistant Finance Minister, Donald Mojuntin, who lauded the setting up of the gallery, called on family members of the victims to liaise with City Hall to provide any memorabilia of their loved ones who died in the crash.

Eleven people, including Fuad who was then Chief Minister for about a month following the elections, were killed when their plane went down at Sembulan on June 6, 1976.

The others on the flight were Ministers Datuk Peter Mojuntin (Local Government and Housing), Datuk Salleh Sulong (Finance), Datuk Chong Thain Vun (Communication and Works), Datuk Darius Binion (Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary), Datuk Wahid Andu, Dr Syed Hussein Wafa, assigned bodyguard Corp. Mohd Said, Ishak Atan (Tengku Razaleigh’s personal secretary), pilot Captain Ghani Nathan and Fuad’s eldest son, Johari.

“It is a commendable move to build the gallery as a way of appreciating and remembering the leaders who passed away in tragedy,” said Donald, who is also the eldest son of the late Mojuntin, at the anniversary of the tragedy here, Saturday.

“It also provides us the opportunity to share the old photos of our late beloved and other memorabilia with the public and visitors who will patronise the gallery.”

He said the gallery would also hold tourism potential in that it can attract tourists and visitors from other states to Sabah.

Among those who attend the memorial Saturday were State Local Government and Housing Assistant Minister Datuk Edward Yong Oui Fah who is also Tanjung Aru Assemblyman, City Hall Director-General Yeo Boon Hai representing Mayor Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim, Kota Kinabalu Deputy Police Chief Supt Rowell Marong, Senator Datuk Maijol Mahap and families of the late Tun Fuad Stephens, the late Datuk Salleh Sulong, the late Datuk Peter Mojuntin, the late Datuk Chong Thain Vun and the late Datuk Darius Binion.

Fuad’s widow, Toh Puan Rahimah, was not present due to illness but her two daughters, Faridah and Fauziah attended.

What is Sabah’s Double Six Tragedy?

From Wikipedia,(modified by kinabalukini)

Tugu Peringatan double sixToday is the 33rd anniversary of Sabah Double six tragedy. What is it actually all about? The Double Six Tragedy, also known as the Double Six Crash, was a plane crash which took place on June 6, 1976 in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. The plane, operated by Sabah Air, coming from Labuan crashed in the sub-district of Sembulan in Kota Kinabalu upon approaching Kota Kinabalu International Airport. The crash killed everyone on board the flight, including Tun Fuad Stephens, the Chief Minister of Sabah at that time. The other passengers on the flight were State Ministers Datuk Salleh Sulong, Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Chong Thien Vun, and assistant minister Darius Binion. Others who perished were the then Secretary of State for the Ministry of Finance of Sabah Datuk Wahid Peter Andau, Director of Economic Planning Unit of Sabah Dr. Syed Hussein Wafa, Isak Atan (Private Secretary to Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah), Corporal Said Mohammad (bodyguard to Tun Fuad Stephens), Captain Gandhi Nathan (the pilot of the aircraft) , tun fuad’s son.

peter-mojuntin-statueThe reason behind the crash is uncertain. Immediately after the accident there were allegations of foul play because of the death of the Chief Minister, but no evidence of such has ever been found. Datuk Peter Mojuntin(36 at that time), the Golden son of Kadazans, was the father of now Sabah Finance Assistant Minister and UPKO’ s Information Officer, Y.B Donald Mojuntin. Ironically, Donald Mojuntin was probably named after Tun Donald Stephens himself, a Kadazandusun Huguan Siou at that time.

Malaysia to expand palm oil industry aggressively, says Dompok

dompok1KOTA KINABALU, June 5 – Malaysia is aggressively expanding its palm oil industry and Sabah has been right on cue with its palm oil industrial cluster developments, says Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Tan Sri Bernard Dompok. He said the Lahad Datu palm oil industrial cluster (POIC Lahad Datu) and the Sawit POIC in Sandakan were important steps in Malaysia’s long-term ambition to remain in the forefront of the global edible oil industry and it must step up efforts to bring in more investors. “We have to strategise and respond swiftly otherwise Indonesia will move ahead of us,” he said, referring to recent plans by the world’s largest palm oil producer to develop industrial complexes to encourage large-scale palm oil downstream industries. Malaysia and Indonesia command some 85 per cent of the world’s palm oil production with the latter slightly ahead as the largest producer. According to a statement issued by POIC Sdn Bhd, here today, Dompok made the remarks at a briefing on state-owned POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd at the Sabah Trade Centre here last Friday. Also present were Industrial Development Minister Datuk Raymond Tan and Minister of Rural Development Datuk Ewon Ebin, who is also the chairman of POIC Sabah. The company is developing the 1,150-acre POIC Lahad Datu which has so far attracted 23 investors and about RM1.3 billion investments. POIC Sabah’s chief executive officer, Dr Pang Teck Wai, gave the briefing which was also attended by newly appointed assistant minister of industrial development Datuk Seri Panglima Michael Asang, the ministry’s new permanent secretary Haji Hashim Paijan and senior officials of POIC Sabah, the Department of Industrial Development and Research, and the State Economic Planning Unit. In the ensuing dialogue, Dr Pang presented Tan Sri Bernard a “wish list” concerning issues critical not only to the success of POIC Lahad Datu but also the sustainability of the palm oil industrial as a whole. Among the items on the list were the promotion of palm oil export to Japan and South Korea, two highly industrialised economies conspicuously absent from the list of major palm oil buyers. Other include strengthening bilateral cooperation with Indonesia in combating anti-palm oil campaigns and achieving the sustainable status of Sabah’s palm oil and mitigating the negative spill-over effects from neighbouring territories allegedly practicing unsustainable methods of oil palm development as well as establishing a biodiesel blending depot at POIC Lahad Datu. Addressing the officers later, Dompok said that one of the surest ways to attracting investors would be to offer them irresistible incentives especially in matters related to land. “We have to rethink our preoccupation with the concern that we must be paid (market price) for the land and recover the money put into the infrastructure, while fully aware that investors are being put off by high land cost. “I think it’s time we look at it as sunk cost and that by making land available at low cost, or perhaps even free, we can attract investors who bring in money, technologies, create jobs and develop our economy,” he added – Bernama

M’rakat KDM disaran tingkat produktiviti

Kaamatan UPKO 09

Pairin is confident successor can do job

Pairin Ewon Handover May 09
GOOD LUCK…Pairin (left) hands over duty to Ewon while Ghulam looks on.

20th May, 2009 KOTA KINABALU: All cabinet ministers share the same approach and responsibility towards eradicating hardcore poverty in the state, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.

The newly appointed Minister of Infrastructure Development disclosed this in the handing over of duty to the new Minister of Rural Development, Datuk Ewon Ebin yesterday.

He said in the new working environment, the minister would be working closely with the district officers and their assistants, and also with officers from local authorities who are the group of people who knew much about the situation in the rural areas.

“I believe and am confident that Datuk Ewon knows what to do best and will work hard to achieve the objective of his new ministry. He hails from the rural area and for sure he has all the ideas on what to do in these areas.

“By going down to the field to meet the district officers, he will be briefed what is going on and will be able to plan suitable poverty eradication programmes. I also hope that the existing programmes will be continuously implemented as they have been approved by the government,” Pairin said.

Ewon said: “When it comes to thinking about the role that every minister has to play for the good of the people, I accept the responsibility with an open heart and with determination.”

He pledged to go on with the programmes that had been laid down by his predecessor and would also be open to take up new measures based on urgency.

Also present were permanent secretary Datuk Ghulam Jelani and political secretary Japirin Sahadi.

More leaders back three DCMs systems

Two Barisan Nasional (BN) component Parties in Sabah yesterday shot down UPKO Youth Chief Arthur Sen’s claim that the current system of three Deputy Chief Ministers (DCMs) in Sabah does not reflect the ‘1Malaysia’ concept.
MCA Sabah Liaison Committee Deputy Chairman Datuk Paul Kong when contacted for comments on Arthur’s statement, said his personal opinion was for the status quo to be maintained as it had served the State well and had been in place for a long time.
Kong who is also a MCA Central Committee Member and the MCA Penampang Division Chairman, said the three DCMs system reflected the three major races in Sabah just the same as in Sarawak.
“If it is to be reduced to one DCM, then the question is who will be the one to make sacrifice because in politics, everybody fights for more, not for less,” he said.
According to him, the State leaders should not be politicking too much on this issue and instead concentrate on their efforts to help Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman in reviving the state and country’s economy.
When the economy is doing well, most of the problems will become non-issues because everybody will be busy and preoccupied with making money, Kong stressed.
“Again, my most sincere advice to all is to respect our present system, to indulge in less politicking and to stand behind PM and CM to improve our economy,” he said.
Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Vice President Herbert Timbun Lagadan also support Sabah UMNO Assistant Secretary Datuk Masidi Manjun’s view on the issue.
“I support Masidi’s contention that it is good to have three DCMs as it reflects the State’s unique community groups,” the Assistant Minister of Community Service and Consumer Affair said.
Having three DCMs, Herbert pointed out, is more sensible and better reflection of fairness to the major community group in Sabah rather than having the two-year rotation of Chief Minister continued.
“If ‘1Malaysia’ can be equality and fair opportunity for all the different races in Sabah, having three DCMs is a more practical solution to fulfill the desire of each community to put up its representative as the CM of Sabah.
“I am not convinced that the UPKO Youth Chief’s stand on the three DCMs reflect the stand of the party’s UPKO leadership,” he said.

We should only have one political party: Jeffrey

DR jefPKR vice president Datuk Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan suggested that the Barisan Nasional (BN) re-look at the need to have racial-based political parties in the country.

“What does 1Malaysia mean? It is a concept where everybody is equal and they respect each other,” he said, adding that having only one political party for Malaysians would be the way to promote the 1Malaysia concept.

Jeffrey said this when asked to comment on UPKO Youth Chief Arthur Sen’s statement alleging that the Sabah Cabinet which has 3 Deputy Chief Ministers, does not reflect the  1Malaysia concept.

Jeffrey said,” On one level I agree with the statement but on the other level I question the root of the problem which is promoting racial-based political parties”

There should be only one political party which is based on the people’s ideology so there are more Ministers to look after the interest of everyone instead of a particular community, he said.

“This means no Umno, MCA, UPKO or MIC. That would be better and there is no discrimination,” he stressed.

Meanwhile Sen made clarification to his earlier statement. He pointed out that the one DCM concept was done before the PBS rule and all the states, except Sabah, Sarawak and Penang, practice the one DCM concept.

3 DCMs good for State: Masidi Manjun

“The 3 DCMs reflect that we have our own local community representatives” he said, adding that all three DCMs have their own responsibility in serving their communities.

Yahya when asked to comment on the statement, he said it was Arthur’s opinion.

“In this democratic country, we are all entitled to voice our own opinions or comments. I do not make any comment” he said after launching the FAMA Induction Course at the National Public Administration Campus here.

Reduce DCM post to one, Why UMNO automatically become Sabah BN Youth Head without consultation?: UPKO Youth

Arthur Sen UPKO Youth Head & Lim AntukaSabah Cabinet which has three Deputy Chief Ministers (DCMs), does not reflect Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s concept of 1Malaysia.

United Pasokmomogun KadazanDusun Murut Organization (UPKO) Youth Chief Arthur Sen said at the moment, there is a DCM to look after the needs of particular community, namely Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin serving the Muslim Bumiputeras, Datuk Seri Panglima Pairin Kitingan, serving the KadazanDusun Murut community and Raymond Tan for Chinese.

“So there is already the sentiment that the DCM only serve one particular community and this message is not good for the 1Malaysia concept” Arthur said. He was of opinion that the 1Malaysia concept could be better serve if there is only one DCM in Sabah which was the system during past Governments such before the Parti Bersatu Sabah rules.

Arthur pointed out that having 3 DCMs not only does not reflect the 1Malaysia concept but also a waste of ‘tax-payers’ money. Should the CM decide to do away the three DCM posts, he said a non-Muslim Bumiputera should be appointed as the new DCM because the CM is from the Muslim Bumiputera community.

On the appointment of Azman Ruslan as Sabah Umno Youth Chief, Arthur said he welcomed the decision by the movement‘s National Chief, Khairy Jamaluddin.

He however disagreed with the fact that Azman was automatically appointed as the Sabah BN Youth Movement Chief.

“Khairy should have consulted the BN component parties’ Youth movements as they may have their own leaders to be recommended for the post”

Arthur also suggested that Azman be referred to as the UMNO Sabah Youth Movement Liaison Chairman which is the same as how the State Central Liaison Committee Chairman are referred to.

Tan should not do it: Upko Youth

Masiung Banah (Upko)Kota Kinabalu: Datuk Raymond Tan should not take along the Sabah Deputy Chief Minister post to peninsula-based Gerakan, according to United Pasok Momogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) Deputy Youth chief, Masiung Banah.

“The action to bring more component parties in Sabah may lead to the problem of party political flooding which will directly affect the credibility and image of the Barisan Nasional, especially in Sabah,” he said.

Masiung who is also Kuamut Assemblyman, however, has full confidence in the wisdom of the Chief Minister and Prime Minister to study and understand the sensitivity of the BN component parties in Sabah.

Meanwhile, PBS Sri Tanjong publicity chief, Tong Yun Fah, said Tan made a “grave error” in joining Gerakan.

He said in the last general election, it was clear that the voters had lost confidence in Gerakan and as such Tan should have the sensible mind to think of his action for the people of Sabah.

In joining Gerakan, Tan showed that it was for his own interest and not for the people of Sabah, especially the Chinese, as he is holding the post of Deputy Chief Minister under the Chinese quota, claimed Tong.

He challenged Tan to step down as Deputy Chief Minister as well as Infrastructure Development Minister, claiming that he had failed to represent the Chinese community as well as in his duties as Minister in charge of infrastructure development.

He said infrastructure in the district such as roads, electricity and water supply were still lacking and have not been addressed despite Tan holding the post for two terms.
